“Boundless” is a snowboard binding system designed to give full freedom when snowboarding as well as being a comfortable solution for a large number of problems that conventional snowboard bindings present. By means of a bearing system, “Boundless” offers a 360° rotational binding attachment that goes between board and binding that enables bindings to be unlocked, quickly adjusted and re-locked into another position depending on the user’s needs. Generic snowboard bindings are fixed in one position to the board by screws that need to be adjusted using a screwdriver which is difficult when you are up the side of a mountain. By using our “Boundless” technology you remove the necessity of tools thus enabling smooth transition between different stances giving the ability to skate along flat surfaces as you would on a skateboard, providing easier, more comfortable lift riding and creating greater scope for freestyle tricks.
Boundless: snowboarding without limitations.
The inspiration for Boundless came from co-founder Alberto, a skier, who became fed up when skiing with friends at how long it took his snowboarding friends to travel along flat areas. As snowboarders do not have poles for providing push-off, and with little means of propulsion apart from gravity, they depend on either their skier friends to drag them along flat-areas once momentum has been lost, or else to unstrap their back foot from its binding and “skate” along. However, unlike skating along as you would on a generic skateboard; with your front foot facing forward in the direction you are going and the other foot providing push-off from the ground, when you are on a snowboard, your front foot is strapped into a binding that faces perpendicular to your board. This makes skating a difficult and slow process for beginner and intermediate boarders and can mean they not only get left behind, but can also result in unnecessary injury from tripping over oneself or one’s board.
Market research was carried out to see if the Boundless idea had a potential market. Through a survey of 47 snowboarders it was revealed that our product not only provided a solution to our original issue, but also to three more problems including; discomfort/pain when riding on chair lifts, not being able to change your binding settings easily on the mountain without tools, and the limitations freestyle snowboarders have with tricks due to being strapped to their board in one position. It was decided that the easiest way to broach this issue and provide a solution to these problems was to design a swivelling baseplate that fits between binding and board with a quick release locking system. Boundless was designed to fit the specs of most snowboard and binding brands and also can easily be custom-made to suit the user’s specific needs. In the future, we aim to incorporate Boundless technology into snowboard bindings themselves.
