WaterSave, an innovative water managment system.

What it does

WaterSave keeps wasted water in a tank while we are waiting for hot water to come out of the tap. Furthermore, it provides an output flow at a digitally selected temperature, thanks to an automatic mixer and calculates the liters of water used.

Your inspiration

Through some travels, I became much more sensitive to issues related to water management. I dedicated much time trying to resolve this problem as in several areas, water is an extremely scarce resource. For example, in some areas of Italy, policy makers decide to disconnect water for some hours per day during the hottest seasons, as there is not enough for all people. Italy is placed first in Europe for water consumption, reaching 241 liters of water per person per day. Any time we shower, we are wasting 12 liters of water. We use hot water through obsolete modalities. Water must be safeguarded and for this reason I develop this project.

How it works

With WaterSave we can select the temperature of water, then the device accumulates the cold water in a tank, until a sensor finds the suitable temperature. Then, WaterSave mixes the hot water with the cold water collected in the tank, allowing the reuse of several liters of water that otherwise would have been wasted. A buzzer, shows the end of the accumulation process and we can to start shower without wasting water. To increase water saving, we introduced a nebulizer that can be activated during the soaping. Electronic circuit and other electronic components are powered thanks to a rechargeable battery or a normal home power grid (if there is the predisposition).

Design process

At the beginning, the project was created to heat up the water through electric energy, in order to speed up water heating and save much water. However, too much energy was utilized for such a process. Hence, I inserted an automatic mixer and a storage tank, obtaining this interesting result: WaterSave.

How it is different

There are not existing projects that aim to reduce digitally the waste of water in people’s homes.

Future plans

An important process, that I will add to the project, is the water reuse. In the last part of the process, I use the support of professional bio cosmetics producers. Using such products would enable us to reuse the water collected during the shower to automatic irrigate the garden or vegetable garden, despite the presence of soap residuals in the water. WaterSave monitors and regulates the PH of the wastewater. In this way, it respects the basic-acid balance of the ground. We need to optimize the use natural sources and the water saved every year through this project, could reach places highly hit by water scarcity.
