Was es macht
Due to the increasing wolf population in Europe, livestock attacks are becoming more frequent. Pherofort combines innovative, humane herd protection based on pheromones with automated wildlife management.
Deine Inspiration
Especially in countries like Germany or Switzerland, the handling of wolves is a hotly debated topic that also divides political camps. Recently, a culling permit for so-called "problem wolves" was issued without prior DNA testing, despite the wolf being strictly protected as an endangered species. We have taken this rigorous measure and the conflict of interest between farmers and conservationists as an opportunity to develop Pherofort.
So funktioniert es
Pherofort consists of the "Beacon," the collar system, and the app. The Beacon is equipped with an intelligent infrared camera and acts as a central node for data transmission, constantly communicating with the collars. The collar system includes anchor collars, comprising a master collar, as well as tag collars. The anchor collars measure distances, while the master collar also sends data via MQTT to a database. These collars use BLE, UWB, and motion sensors for precise location tracking through triangulation. The tag collars are equipped with pheromone cartridges to deter wolves. In case of danger, the master collar activates defensive measures by releasing pheromones from the tag collars to keep wolves at bay. These tag collars mostly remain in deep sleep to ensure long-term power supply. All collected data are analyzed using pattern-matching algorithms and transmitted to the app when necessary.
Designprozess
Our design and development process began with extensive research on existing herd protection measures, interviews with responsible foresters, and the analysis of herd behavior. Additionally, we were in contact with various research institutions that had already achieved good results in the research of pheromones and signaling substances. We then established a list of mandatory requirements that would accompany us throughout the entire project. This list included not only the safe and non-violent deterrence of wolves but also the complete and automated documentation of wolf sightings in the respective area and their reporting to the relevant institutions. The latter requirement was particularly important to us, as valid numbers on wolf populations in Europe and Germany vary greatly and no reliable information can be provided. In the next step, we focused on the technical implementation of the basic concept we had envisioned. We built various prototypes, tested evaporators and and developed the communication between the individual components. After clarifying all technical questions, we adapted our concept to the technical possibilities and started designing the beacon and the collars. The final app concept and its implementation followed thereafter.
Warum es anders ist
Pherofort distinctly differs from traditional herd protection measures by integrating modern technologies and data-driven approaches. Uniquely, it also uses pheromones as a deterrent, representing a promising approach to non-violent repellence. The system autonomously responds to threats. Pherofort not only acts preventively but also proactively collects and processes data that can be used for further scientific analysis and improvements in wildlife management. The associated app is also unique in this form, allowing livestock owners better insights into their respective herds.
Pläne für die Zukunft
Our project started as a semester assignment in 2023, but it certainly didn't end with the conclusion of the semester. We believe in our concept and are continuously working on it. Currently, we are in the process of developing the associated app software. We are determined to continue optimizing our project even after completing our bachelor's degree, speaking with potential investors, and applying for funding such as the Exist grant for business startups.
