What it does

TThe AquaShield Microfiber Filter is an advanced filtration system designed to be installed in household washing machines to capture microplastics released during laundry cycles.

Your inspiration

A year ago, while I was helping a college by taking samples of the water around corals in Veracruz, I notice that there were multiple waste water discharges channel near the reef. After the analysis of the samples, she could determine that the main componentes of the microplastics founded in the water came from textile fibers.

How it works

The AquaShield Microfiber Filter operates through a multi-stage filtration system that captures microplastics released during laundry cycles. Installed between the washing machine drum and the drainage system, it effectively prevents microplastics from entering wastewater systems. The modular design allows for tool-free extraction of the filter. Simple Cleaning: The filter can be rinsed or replaced periodically, ensuring consistent performance and preventing clogging.

Design process

The development of the AquaShield Microfiber Filter has followed a rigorous and iterative process, incorporating feedback from environmental experts, engineers, and potential users. Below is a step-by-step breakdown of the design evolution: 1. Ideation and Concept Development (Phase 1 - Initial Concept) 2. Initial Design A preliminary design with a single-layer mesh capable of capturing larger microfibers but with limitations in capturing particles below 10 microns.

How it is different

Main Value: Protecting marine ecosystems by preventing microplastic pollution from washing machines while providing a sustainable, easy-to-use, and cost-effective solution. For Households : Reduces microplastic pollution from synthetic clothing. Provides a low-maintenance, energy-free filtration solution. For Hospitality Industry: Allows hotels, laundromats, and coastal businesses to meet environmental sustainability goals. Demonstrates corporate responsibility by reducing microfiber release. For Regulatory Bodies:

Future plans

Since the AquaShield Microfiber Filter is still in the conceptual and prototyping phase, the next stages of development will focus on transforming the theoretical design into a fully functional, market-ready product. 1. Advanced Simulation and Refinement (Stage 1: Design Optimization) 2. Laboratory Testing and Validation (Stage 2: Proof of Concept Validation) 3. Prototype Fabrication and Initial Field Testing (Stage 3: Prototype Construction and Testing) Objective:
