Fire GeoPrimer

Fire GeoPrimer is a geopolymeric intumescent flame retardant primer coating for wood applications, using nanosilica and aluminum from an agro-industrial waste and clay

What it does

It incorporates nano silica synthesized from agro-industrial waste and aluminum from a clay to enhance fire performance, providing better fire resistance and protection for wooden structures. It also provides a surface for paints to hold onto.


Your inspiration

The inspiration for this invention came from the high incidence of fire-related incidents in the Philippines and the environmental issue of solid wastes, particularly the agro-industrial wastes. Combining these two problems led to the innovative idea of creating a sustainable, fire-resistant coating using waste materials.


How it works

The coating works by forming an intumescent layer when exposed to heat, which expands and creates a protective char barrier. This layer insulates the wood, delaying ignition and reducing the backside temperature. Nanosilica enhances the geopolymer matrix, improving adhesion and thermal stability.


Design process

The design was developed by experimenting with different geopolymer molar oxide ratios (SiO2 and Na2O ) and nanosilica concentrations. Various formulations were tested for fire performance, adhesion, and thermal stability. The most effective formulation was identified through rigorous testing and analysis.

Fire GeoPrimer coating is unique due to its use of waste-derived nanosilica, providing a sustainable solution to fire protection. It offers superior fire resistance, adhesion, and thermal stability compared to commercial products, and it is more affordable, making it accessible for wider use.
