What it does
iO harmonizes modern technology with the classic sophistication of handwriting. Designed as an AI smart wellness lamp, iO captures your precious memories and monitors cognitive wellness through handwriting analysis, habit tracking, and personalized reminders.
Your inspiration
Our inspiration stems from a blend of personal experience and a pressing societal need. Two team members, each with grandparents afflicted by severe Alzheimer's, ignited a profound sense of purpose to develop a proactive solution. Moreover, as we delved into research, the alarming statistic from the Alzheimer's Association—8 in 10 people risk Alzheimer's by age 80—underscored the urgency. This convergence of personal connection and societal imperative drove us to innovate a multifunctional lamp integrating healthy lifestyle promotion and early detection mechanisms, aiming to make a tangible impact on cognitive health.
How it works
Our innovative wellness lamp, iO, functions as a comprehensive cognitive support system. It begins by scanning handwritten notes in our custom notebook using its integrated camera. Our pre-trained algorithm then assesses the user’s handwriting, detecting subtle changes that may indicate cognitive changes. Simultaneously, iO records daily activities noted in the custom notebook, such as exercise, categorizing them accordingly. Upon request, iO retrieves this data and, utilizing the OpenAI ChatGPT API, generates personalized reminders, supportive messages, and useful tips via a mobile app and the built-in speaker. Users can also monitor their progress by directly asking iO through the embedded microphone, about their progress, streaks, and suggestions for improvement. Through continuous monitoring of lifestyle habits and handwriting, iO proactively supports users in maintaining cognitive wellness and postponing the onset of Alzheimer's disease.
Design process
Our project started by recognizing the growing challenges faced by the aging population, especially the elderly and disabled. We aimed to design a product that enhances their quality of life. Beginning with a literature review on Alzheimer's disease and existing solutions, we identified a gap in proactive, non-invasive diagnostic tools. This led to the creation of iO, a device that tracks cognitive health through handwriting analysis while promoting healthy habits and brain training. Our research also uncovered the efficacy of utilizing contemporary machine learning algorithms in handwriting analysis for identifying cognitive decline. Our design process included creating conceptual sketches, looks-like and functional prototypes. Moreover, feedback gathered from caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's ensured iO met real-world needs. An iterative approach included tests on memory recording and habit tracking, shaping iO's features. Interviews with experts and potential users offered insights into how technology can empower individuals with dementia, promoting independence and peace of mind for families. Through collaboration and research, the project evolved from rough prototypes to a polished product vision, balancing aesthetic appeal and cost-effectiveness.
How it is different
iO distinguishes itself from other wellness and cognitive health products by uniquely integrating modern technology with the classic art of handwriting. Unlike traditional diagnostic methods for Alzheimer's disease, such as lumbar punctures and PET scans, which are invasive and involve radiation exposure, iO offers a non-invasive alternative. It leverages advanced handwriting analysis to detect early signs of cognitive decline, making early diagnosis more accessible and user-friendly. Apart from early diagnosis, iO encourages healthy habits with tracking and personalized reminders, enhancing memory health and overall well-being. This innovative dual functionality not only helps in early detection, but also in proactive prevention of cognitive decline. Moreover, the lamp’s elegant design seamlessly fits into users' daily lives, offering both functionality and aesthetic appeal, making iO a truly unique and comprehensive solution in the market.
Future plans
In the future, we aim to work closely with leading researchers in handwriting analysis for early Alzheimer's detection. Our goal is to improve iO's diagnostic capabilities, turning it into a non-invasive early detection tool for hospitals, care homes, and clinics. By integrating advanced handwriting analysis and incorporating feedback from clinical studies, we strive to offer a cost-effective and reliable alternative to conventional genetic testing. This strategy will enhance access to early diagnosis, potentially delaying Alzheimer's progression and improving the quality of life for many.
