What it does
TerraCool revolutionizes cooling with eco-friendly terracotta beads and jute threads, retaining water to naturally cool the environment. It offers a sustainable, energy-efficient alternative to traditional ACs, perfect for a greener future.
Your inspiration
The inspiration for TerraCool came from witnessing the environmental impact of traditional air conditioning. With a background in ceramic design, I explored terracotta’s natural cooling properties. Observing traditional cooling methods in rural areas, I combined terracotta beads and jute threads to create an eco-friendly system that cools interiors through evaporation. This approach addresses the urgent need for sustainable, energy-efficient cooling solutions, aligning with my passion for sustainable design and a greener future.
How it works
TerraCool is an innovative cooling system designed with terracotta beads aligned with jute threads. To operate, water is simply passed through its channels, wetting both the jute and terracotta. As hot air flows through the aerodynamically designed terracotta beads, the system traps heat and provides cool air into the room. This natural evaporative cooling process is highly efficient and eco-friendly. TerraCool’s modular design allows for customization based on consumer needs and space requirements. This flexibility ensures it can be tailored to any environment, while also supporting local artisans through the use of traditional terracotta craftsmanship.
Design process
The design process for my TerraCool project began with an in-depth study of Terracotta, focusing on its porosity and natural properties. Inspired by local traditional cooling practices, I questioned why modern alternatives like ACs prevail. This led to extensive secondary and primary research, interviewing potential users to understand their needs and preferences. I started prototyping with thermocol and paper to experiment with forms before moving to Terracotta, considering its firing process constraints. Each prototype iteration refined both form and function, ensuring practicality and aesthetic appeal. Practical testing was crucial for understanding installation and modularity challenges. Through these steps, I honed the TerraCool concept into a solution that merges natural materials with effective cooling technology.
How it is different
TerraCool innovatively harnesses Terracotta’s natural porosity and cooling properties to offer a sustainable alternative to conventional ACs. Unlike typical cooling systems, it integrates traditional wisdom with modern technology, providing effective cooling while using natural materials. TerraCool’s design evolution—from initial prototypes using thermocol and paper to refined Terracotta forms—ensures functionality and aesthetic appeal. Practical testing has validated its ability to address installation challenges and enhance modularity. This eco-friendly approach makes TerraCool a standout choice for environmentally conscious consumers seeking efficient and culturally inspired cooling solutions.
Future plans
The next steps for the Terracotta Curtain Project include extensive testing to gather data and enhance functionality, efficiency, and modularity. I aim to collaborate with traditional artisans for manufacturing, promoting an inclusive economy and fair employment. By making the system scalable, both urban and rural populations can adopt this eco-friendly solution. Refining the design will improve its performance and adaptability, ensuring widespread accessibility. My goal is to provide an energy-efficient cooling alternative, promote environmental sustainability, and reduce inequality.
