Para qué sirve
The purpose of the drone-based structural inspection project is to provide effecient, safe, and accurate assessments of critical infrastructure without the risks that the traditional methods have towards construction workers and with lower costs.
Qué te inspiró
I am a Civil Engineer and this is something that I have observed since my first job, the idea of having a method in which this inspections can be safer and more efficient is something that has always been in scope within the construction industry but has never been done before.
Cómo funciona
The industrial grade drones will be equipped with LiDAR sensors which will give real-time data of the structure stress factors, this data will be sent to a software and the algorithm pre uploaded with the related parameters for the structural analysis needed in concrete and steel infrastructure, this information will be condensated in a Finite Element Analysis to show the areas in which the material are most stressed, and finally all this information will be uploaded to a BIM model into the cloud in which every person working on the project can visualize it.
Proceso de diseño
The idea first came when in my first job I was sent to make an inspection of a poultry farm, it took hours, a lot of people and costly materials, that´s when I started to ask myself if another way of doing it could be possible, but it wasn´t until my Master´s degree classes that I started to elaborate more into the idea and realize that it may be not that crazy after all. The first prototype I thought about did not include the sensors or the algorithm, it just included a camera to look at the structure closely without the process taking hours to complete, then by looking into potential technologies and with some of my knoledge obtained during my bachelor´s degree, I came to the realization that I could combine more technology in order to make the process even more efficient and figuring a way in which it can also be profitable. Also living in Mexico there is always a hurricane or earthquake hitting the country and after this natural disasters occur it is very important to check if the infrastructure standing is safe to occupy and this product can give us an accurate assessment without risking the life of the people making the inspection.
Qué lo hace diferente
It is unique because even if the construction industry is one of the oldest to exist, it has not had a lot of reinventions in history, the use of all this technologies combined can bring a lot of potential into this sector and also bring a lot of needed safety not only to the construction workers but also for the end users of the infrastructure, which is all of us.
Planes para el futuro
I would like to finally create the software and the algorithm for this, I am no expert in software development but finding the right people is always key in making a project work, also the algorithm is the heart of this project and having it done can mark a big progress.
