CASCAD is an innovative solution which gives a new dimension to the helmet market. This system provides a practical solution to secure your bike and helmet while not using it. It combines protective headgear for cyclists and a connected locker for bicycles.

Cumbersome is the first word that comes to mind when wearing a helmet while biking. Nevertheless, it's indispensable and can reduce the risk of neurological damage in case of an accident by up to 90%. That's how the CASCAD project came out: solving the inherent issue of helmets by giving them new functionality and making bicycle safety more accessible.

Comment ça marche

Once you arrive at your destination, place your helmet on the saddle of your bike, unlock it on your phone and then unroll the cable to attach your helmet around your bike to secure both equipment. This lock is a connected device activated with a NFC secure key. Also, the electrical signal running through the conductive cable sends a notification to the owner if someone tries to cut it. In case of theft, this notification might help the police tracking it more easily.

Processus de conception

The idea surfaced in June 2023 after observing that no students were wearing helmets in our study town. We ran a survey which revealed the main points of pain were bulk and unattractiveness. We wanted to respond to this problem with a smart helmet adapted to urban style. Following several mock-up phases throughout the creative process, we created a system completely integrated into the helmet design. After making a few prototypes, we realised that the cable fitted very well to the exterior design and that this position made installation quick and efficient. We iterated multiples design to develop this user-centred product with the help of CAD software, rendering and 3D printing.

CASCAD represents a breakthrough in helmet design, offering a new dimension to your product. It turns your bike helmet into a connected locker, so you don't have to carry it around and make the helmet a reflexive habit. It rethinks the design of a traditional helmet with its innovative features. This innovation secures your bike with an integrated connected locker and offers global surveillance.

Plans pour l'avenir

We are currently working on the final manufacture of the helmet, the colours and accessories. We're also in the midst of research into using an innovative and promising material for the locker: 2DPA-1. It is a brand new, very light plastic that is twice as strong as steel, easy to produce and even conducts electricity. We are also looking to manufacture the helmet using 3D printing technology alone. Until graduating from engineering school and acquiring all the necessary skills, we will integrate this project into the UTC start-up bank for this project to mature.
