Eczema is an incurable and common skin condition among Singaporeans. Based on research, 21% of children and 11% of adults in Singapore have eczema. Developed with members who have eczema, EczemShield challenges the team to find a solution and relieve eczema symptoms.

The team's product incorporates a scratch protection layer to shield the skin from further damage caused by scratching, alongside a coolant layer designed to provide moisture to the affected skin area. Additionally, it features a skin-friendly adhesive formulation that mitigates any potential irritations for users with sensitive skin. These integrated layers are seamlessly bound together to create a patch, facilitating effortless application onto the affected area. This simplicity enables users to swiftly alleviate discomfort as soon as they sense an itch.

The team began the design process with in-depth user and market research, seeking to understand the diverse needs of individuals battling eczema. It was discovered that few eczema treatments provide scratch protection and cooling. Embracing the Engineering Design Process, the team utilised tools like Quality Functional Deployment, Morphological Charting, Concept Generation, Concept Selection, and Material Selection, thus creating a prototype to produce a scratch-proof and cooling eczema solution Testing the prototype in a scratch intensity test, the team devised a testing apparatus using Medical Granufoam to simulate an arm and carbon paper to observe scratch lines. The damage and scratch lines on the simulated arm provided evaluative readings and results. In the temperature test, a temperature sensor was used to monitor the temperature drop variation through this testing by conducting a 1-hour experiment in a non-aircon environment with the same test subject. By prototyping reiteratively, the team meticulously refined each prototype and picked the best materials and design for the job, ensuring each element contributed to its effectiveness and usability. These test trials then funnelled down the most promising prototypes for further refinement.
