Amid the dense smoke in fire ground, the firemen can only go forward slowly by touching the wall or counting upon the infrared thermal imager. In such a pressing condition, failure to timely know equipment information and the noise and mess of fire ground make them unable to precisely receive instructions, which are the causes of danger.


Comment ça marche

Our goal is trying to solve the problems which firefighters would encounter at the scene of the fire. At the aspect of software, we replace the Acrylic facemask with the three layers of transparent display. The system check the equipment state automatically before they get into the fire to ensure their safety. The system would display the rest of the amount of the air bottle and speculate how long the fire fighters can stay. We apply the skeleton identification technology to control the interface by gesture.Besides, we integrate the thermal imager on the mask which is made by Flexible to let them choose to use or not according to the situation.If they encounter any dangerous, the command center will launch a retreat order which shown on the mask screen in order not to miss the golden window. When the victims are found, the fireman open the foldable Symbiotic mask for them. It is inconvenient that we use Fibrance to guide their retreat route.


Processus de conception

After a profound user interview, we listed five important pain point: heavy equipment, can’t forecast the emergency, communication difficulty, Blurred vision and Unclear to equipment state. We aim at the pain point which mentioned above and draw up our design principles: Maximize sight zone, Functional integration and Intuitive operation. We refer to the mask which is existed and separate the wheat from the chaff. The biggest problem we met is how to integrate the thermal imager into the mask. The hand-held infrared thermal imager is changed to be worn on hand, which, is not intuitive enough as the firemen often use hands to operate in disaster relief. To facilitate firemen's operation, the infrared thermal imager is integrated on the facepiece as cover type or left-right opening type, while the protruded imager is prone to collide and fracture and is incompatible with helmet. We applied the flexibility of Corning willow glass to the exterior mirror, which can be stored on side, and drawn out for use. Considering the massy firefighting gloves are not favorable for keying, it occurs to us that we can wear hand sensor under the gloves. However, the wearing and the wiring are the problems. Lastly, we decided to use frame distinguishing system to realize operation through gesture.

We hope that we can protect firemen and the victims comprehensively, and we also try to help the firemen to fight the fire more effectively. Our works include two masks, one is for firefighters and the other is for victims. The masks which are already existed on the market only have single function and they don’t vary greatly. We see the mask as another command and information center, helping firefighters execute their mission more safely. In addition, firefighters always see symbiotic mask as nothing, while they don’t use it despite the fact that they are carry it because it can’t provide enough protection.The symbiotic mask which is existed is not sealed and it will waste the air of the bottle which firefighters carry. The air shortage will lead firemen to a dangerous situation or even death. We use the material of silica gel at the edge of the mask in order to fit the face, adding the toxic filter to get extra period to let the victim escape from the fire.


Plans pour l'avenir

We already completed the final design and user survey analysis. Now we are on the promoting stage, and joined many competition and exhibition such as Taiwan Yodex exhibition. It’s glad that Quasi Mask received favourable comments and we are looking forward to sharing our concept with the world and calling attention to the fire issue. We hope to cooperate with industry to improve it and launch some day.
