What it does

Ferris Box is a kinetic furniture that can be adjusted easily by all types of users, for better accessibility of varied heights of the storage units.

Your inspiration

The design of Ferris Box was initiated from a question, “can a drawer located in high position go lower to reach a child’s hand?”, by observing a scene of a child struggling to reach higher position than his height in a bookshop. During this inquiry process, mechanism of a Ferris wheel which makes a passenger’s ride effortless by descending cabins through rotation inspired the project. With such an inspiration of utilising height variation mechanism, a new concept of ‘kinetic furniture’ was born.

How it works

The storage boxes are fixed on a rotary rail, which lets users to adjust the height of each box easily by controlling the lever. The size of storage boxes and the spaces between the rail were designed to avoid the interference between the boxes and to prevent users from getting jammed while in use. In addition, surplus space was minimised for better space application.

Design process

Often, living furnitures are accompanied by inaccessible heights for wheelchair users. Despite of the fact, one of the reasons why such furnitures are inevitable for wheelchair users is that they usually share a living space with able-bodied users. Furthermore, especially for storage solutions, tall furnitures provide a definite benefit by maximising efficiency in space utilisation. Ferris Box was designed to solve this issue by keeping the advantage of conventional furnitures while changing them in a way for wheelchair users to have a good access on varied heights. Its design was inspired by the mechanical principles of Ferris wheels, which was adopted as the base operating principle of the furniture. While the fundamental structure is identical with Ferris wheels, two axes were applied to offer stability in use. The storage boxes are designed to avoid collision and are designed to minimise surplus space between the boxes. Additionally, the furniture was structured with the most ideal height and angle for usage, through defining the general available distance for wheelchair users in accordance with human factors data.

How it is different

We stretch our arm, when we find our stuff to furniture. but we designed ferris box through the stuffs is came to user by itself. It is made to user who needs to not general furniture but kinetic furniture.

Future plans

After finish the sketch model, We improve to the quality of product add to user's survey and needs survey. We want to people enjoy the convenience of ferris box through crowdfunding or investing
