What it does

The design makes it mandatory for the driver to wear the helmet in order to start his two-wheeler.

Your inspiration

During my college life, a senior told me to participate in an innovation competition and started searching for a grave problem. In my research,I found out that each year,1.25 million people are killed on roadways around the world and half of those people killed in crashes globally are pedestrians, motorcyclists, and cyclists. It inspired me to create a product to decrease road accident deaths to a larger extent and started searching for the reasons behind these deaths. The reason was clear i.e. Nonuse of motorcycle helmets. Wearing a motorcycle helmet correctly can reduce the risk of death by almost 40% and the risk of severe injury by over 70%.

How it works

There are two modules of our product, one is in helmet and the second module is fitted onto the two-wheeler. The helmet gets switched on by putting the strap and the sensor inside helmet detects the presence of a human. It ensures that the driver has worn the helmet and sends the signal wirelessly to switch on the two wheeler which is controlled by a relay circuit. Bluetooth encryption is being used to which makes it safe from thefts. Also, an accelerometer and crash sensors detect accidents and send the nearby ambulance to the victim's location. The helmet has been designed to allow for maximum air flow to reduce perspiration and itching which is prominent in humid conditions.

How it is different

We started off with a commercially available helmet.Put our sensors, microcontroller and batteries over the helmet using double tapes and glue.Once we were finished with finalising the technology and features, we moved towards miniaturising the modules using SMD components. Finally, we designed a helmet on our own which had cavities in which our components could be seated and increased the air venting in the helmet to reduce perspiration and itching. The electronics would all be behind a hard metal foam casing to avoid and head injuries. We have decided to add an extra metal foam layer after the components to block any radiation whatsoever that may arise.

Future plans

Our design is unique in the sense that there is no other commercially available product which solves these grave threats like head injuries in accidents, untimely medical help to the victim and vehicle thefts. We have gone one step further to improve the design of the helmets available to reduce perspiration and itching which is the single largest reason people for people to not wear helmets. There are anti-theft devices available which can be manually installed onto two-wheelers under the seat but are cumbersome to install and have been questioned for reliability. We, on the contrary, would sell our tech

Awards

We won the following awards: Winners-Ericsson Innovation Awards 2016-Cash grant of $20,000. Gitex Dubai Technology Week-Top ten in the world-Showcased the prototype with most prominent tech companies.
