The decision to solve the problem of umbrella drying stemmed from observing the common solutions used during rainy days in Singapore: plastic covers and absorbent microfiber pads. Despite the frequent rainy weather there was a lack of innovation in umbrella drying technology. The idea for the solution was inspired by the significant amount of plastic waste generated from umbrella sleeves during rainy weather. Recognizing the need for environmental conservation and sustainability, the team sought to develop a solution that not only addressed this waste issue but also provided a more efficient and faster method of drying umbrellas.

The Sunny Swivel, an advanced umbrella drying technology, is meticulously engineered with a range of critical components to ensure unparalleled drying efficiency. At its core, it features a rotating tube, stepper motor, high-performance microfiber cloth lining, powerful high-speed fan, rubber cover, and stand. This comprehensive system seamlessly integrates mechanical rotation, microfiber-based drying, and robust airflow, providing a holistic solution for rapid and thorough umbrella drying. The tube, serving as the primary drying chamber, features a top rubber cover to prevent water leakage and is lined with microfiber cloth for enhanced drying. A bearing mechanism, coupled with a gear driven by a bidirectional stepper motor, enables smooth and consistent rotation of the tube for thorough drying. Elevated on a stand, the tube ensures optimal airflow from the high-speed fan mounted at the base, ensuring seamless operation and efficient drying.
設計過程
Prototype #1 features a sensor-controlled swivel door that opens and closes. Users insert the umbrella from the front, securing it with a clip. Closing the door activates the fan and rotating tube, lined with microfiber for drying. Additionally, a top dome prevents water splashing. In Prototype #2, the sensor-controlled swivel mechanism was scrapped due to its complexity and maintenance drawbacks. The rotating door posed concerns of tangled electrical wiring, as well as misalignment which makes the blowing less efficient due to unnecessary air loss. As a result, the design was altered to allow the umbrella to be loaded from the top rather than the front. Additionally, the dome was replaced by a rubber flap, ensuring a sleeker appearance while preventing splashing. This flap also facilitates efficient airflow, while addressing the height concern of the overall product. Maintaining prototype #2's design, a gear and a ball bearing were added to boost rotating tube efficiency. The gear was mounted at the bottom to ease axial and torsion loading, eventually attaching to a bearing for smooth rotation. A stepper motor will drive the rotation, mimicking wiping actions. To optimize fan efficiency, components will be raised minimally for better airflow while ensuring product stability.

The development includes two versions: a household variant engineered for optimal efficiency in domestic settings, and a commercial iteration equipped with inner tube flaps to facilitate enhanced drying performance in high-traffic environments. These innovations collectively aim to revolutionize the standards for efficiency and hygiene in umbrella drying technology.
